Philadelphia’s favorite indie folk trio, Good Old War, known for their infectious sing-alongs, released the first in a proposed trilogy of EPs Part of Me. This release is following their 2015’s full length album, Broken into Better Shape, which had much mainstream success.
The collection is led by opening track, “The River”, a classic song that features the trio’s signature harmonies, and sing-along lyricism “our lives are just a river/we’re all going to meet in the ocean”. The track sounds infectious just like any other of their songs, but delivers much tighter and crisper.
The ballads are some of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and single, “Part of Me”, delivers on that with the trio’s harmonies and the gentle guitar strums led by Schwartz.
The three-piece has always been solid at writing relatable lyrics paired with beautiful arrangements that are easy to sing along to; that doesn’t exclude “Only a Number”. It’s fresh, yet familiar and fits the Good Old War mold perfectly.
The gentle ballad “How Did You Find Me” is a nice step away from the band’s sound, while also not drifting too far away from what they’re best at. The extended play is bookended with what’s sure to be a fan favorite on “Oak Trees”, similar to the trio’s previous single, “Loud Love”. At the end of the song, you can hear the guys talking in the background.
Part Of Me is a set of signature Good Old War tunes that are perfect for your autumn playlist and gives you five fresh new tracks to memorize the lyrics to.
