They’re called The Weeks and they need to be your new favorite band. This may sound a little bold, but within a few minutes you, too, will be shouting their praises.
The band started with five Mississippi high school kids who were pretty good at playing music in 2006. Since then they’ve managed to put together a pretty impressive set of original songs, gone on tour to promote said songs with bands such as the Meat Puppets (!!), and signed with Kings of Leon’s own record label. Do you get the preemptive enthusiasm now?
Philadelphia played host to The Weeks and Junior Astronomers last Saturday the 18th at MilkBoy. Leading the night off was Philly’s very own Shark Tape. Things started off well with the hometown band doing us proud and kicked up when Junior Astronomers took the stage. Then came The Weeks. Being a new fan I was genuinely excited. I learned a few songs, but hadn’t memorized them to the severity of the evident die-hard followers in the undersized crowd. For what the room lacked in size, my crowd-mates made up for in enthusiasm. And for good reason. They already knew about the talent I was about to personally witness.
The Weeks have the unique ability to transcend above their Mississippi born and bred sound while still being able to identify with it. This becomes critical for a band because musical identity is what makes or breaks a band. Done wrong and it’s just a noisy mess. Done right and listeners from a variety of regions and genres can come to love a type of music that is intangibly familiar but new to them. Here lies The Weeks – a southern fusion of damn good indie rock. Their sound is reminiscent of daresay…Kings of Leon?
So while you peruse their collection of songs and get caught up on everything you need to know to be their new number one fan, they’ll be hard at work prepping a new album, due out April 2013. I know, I know. I don’t think I can wait that long either.
