The Canadian-born, Vancouver-based singer/songwriter, Geoff Gibbons, shares his new single, “Keep On Driving,” a folk-inflected tune with true storyteller genes.
“In these times of uncertainty ‘Keep On Driving’ is a longing for freedom. Caught in the well-worn circle of day to day survival…I wondered what would happen if I didn’t turn in the driveway and just kept going. It speaks to life in general… The smallest move or gesture can completely change the direction of life. We forget we have control over those moves every minute.. as fear and comfort often hold us where we are,” He says.
The track was produced by John Macarthur Ellis and Geoff Gibbons himself.
Gibbons is a full-time musician and producer who has always had a life of music. Growing up, he was captivated by singer/songwriters like Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young. At age 20, he took off for Australia to perform for “tourists in the evening and luxuriate seaside during the day.”
Later on, he formed the duo Silverlode, with a visiting friend from Canada. The duo returned to Canada and performed on bills with Emmylou Harris, The McGarrigle Sisters, David Crosby, and Levon Helm and Rick Danko of The Band.
As he became a solo artist, he advanced his songwriting with even more ambitious albums. He began writing songs for visual projects like Higher Ground, Just Cause, and Robson Arms. He also did Mook and the adult comedy series The Mr. Dink Show.
In 2017, it was the right time to begin a new solo project. “It began with me compiling,” he says. “I combed the material until it started taking shape.”
A trip to some of the most famous North American music cities was a journey for Gibbons. Gibbons and two friends flew to Muscle Shoals, Nashville and Memphis. “When I got back home I wasn’t just inspired, I was altered,” Geoff remembers. “It was like traveling to a musical Mecca.” Echoes of this experience permeate Geoff’s musical tapestry, a fine mix of Roots, Americana, Rock, and Soul.
