The City of Philadelphia will be the first stop on Trixie Whitey’s US and European tour to promote her first solo album The Fourth Corner, scheduled to release on January 29th.
As the daughter of the late blues/rock singer-songwriter Chris Whitley, Whitley’s musical journey began at birth. Born in Belgium in 1987, she spent time touring with her dad as a child which set the stage for own journey of musical freedom and identity. When discussing her upbringing she admits, “It definitely shaped me a lot as I never questioned what I was going to become, because it was obvious at such a young age.”
However. making an identity for yourself in the music industry has been no yellow brick road for Whitley. Upon moving to Brooklyn, she quickly became a part of the New York grind but the music never stopped. “I will never give up on music, I can’t even imagine that.” says Whitley.“I have struggled a lot with the choice of making it a career and I have questioned it several times in my life. It is a very challenging route especially when it is so close to your heart.”
When handing off her demo to musician and producer Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan) she quickly founds herself under his wing and soon became his lead vocal for Black Dub. In 2010, Jive Records and Lanois released Black Dub and Whitley spent most of 2011 touring. She explained her time working with Lanois as “pretty wild, I found myself with this living legend, I was really intimidated at first but also so amazingly thankful for the experience.”
Since that time she has been captivating crowds at festivals such as SXSW, Bonnaroo, and Celebrate Brooklyn. In January she was invited to perform at Eurosonic 2013, one of the largest showcase and festival in Europe. She can even be found featured in February’s issue of Elle Magazine.
Today, she celebrates her first solo album, The Fourth Corner. “Now it’s my time to create something that is my own.” Whitley explains. “The record is so much about finding a sense of identity.” Tracks like “Breathe You In My Dreams” and “Need Your Love” can sweep even the most unsuspecting individual off their feet. She even admits, “When I play it tends to be pretty intense and it is an emotional experience.”
At only 25, Trixie Whitley has made her own path to the top of the list of upcoming artists on the rise for 2013. As she starts a new journey with her first solo album and tour, Whitley explains, “I want to make a statement that I really do have a very strong vision for my identity as an artist.” Without a doubt, her smooth and soulful sound is one of a kind, captivating and almost intoxicating. You must hear it to believe it, but don’t take my word for it. I invite you to lose yourself in her seductive sound on Friday, February 1st, 2013 at World Café Live.
