“There’s a fork in the road in front of me,” the first line of The Unlikely Candidate’s song, “Follow My Feet”. With great vocals and a strong beat, this song and the band behind it, have the force to push you through the last days of summer and into the fall. This weekend, they’ll do just that at Radio 104.5’s last summer block party of 2013. The Unlikely Candidates is the perfect group to close it out.
Coming from Fort Worth, Texas, this indie rock quintet has been causing quite a buzz in the music world and they’ve already shared the stage with acts like Fall Out Boy and The Dirty Heads. Recently, The Unlikely Candidates have also played two large festivals in Canada with a line up including Passion Pit, Blink 182, City and Colour, AWOLNATION, Weezer and more. Though it’s obvious that The Unlikely Candidates are busy being thrown into a tour across North America, Even though the guys are super busy on tour Jared Hornbeek, Cole Male and Kyle Morris took a few minutes out of their busy schedule to speak with That Mag.
“We don’t have an active website, we are working on it and we have to purchase the domain name. We will have one eventually,” the guys explain when I tell them I came across their Myspace page. With a plethora of social media networks and websites created specifically for bands to share their music, it’s really not even necessary for official band websites anymore. So with or without, we’ll still be able to find your music, guys! “Our mothers post stuff on our Facebook, trying to be secretive all the time,” they say.
The Myspace page describes the music of The Unlikely Candidates as fresh sounding. It’s not a term used every day to talk about a band’s genre or sounds. What’s up with that? “We have had a lot of adjectives used to describe our music,” says the band. “We used “fresh” to describe putting a new spin on older sounds, sort of like a throw back, a fresh sound on something old.” The “fresh” music is coming together nicely, and the band’s five-song EP, Follow My Feet, will be available to download on September 24th.
I spoke with the band on the night of Male’s birthday. Their sense of humor and genuine enjoyment of one another’s company was really shining through when they began throwing around ideas for birthday celebrations. In keeping with the light, happy mood, I ask the guys where they thought their best show has been so far. Maybe they’re just trying to win over the Philly crowd this weekend, maybe they’re really just being honest, but, “Philly was one of our coolest shows. It was hot up there the day of the show and we felt like we just ran a marathon. But, it was a very cool show.”
If the weather app on my phone speaks the truth, this weekend should be perfect in the mid to high sixties. Though, the Piazza will be packed and the high energy on stage will still make it feel much hotter. Wear your shorts! You don’t want to miss this band live, and free. They’ll be playing Saturday with The Airborne Toxic Event and American Authors.
These guys have risen quickly to fame and gained a loyal fan base. “Our friends from back home came out to every single show we had, even if they were the only ones there and then it just became a big party.” So yes, these guys do like to party. Why wouldn’t they? So get up early this Saturday and check out their show. You have all winter to sleep in.
“We love all of our fans! We want to meet all of you, drink with all of you and just hangout with all of you!” From the mouths of The Unlikely Candidates. So go, have a drink with these guys.
