As an eclectic fan of music, I love to stumble upon bands that cannot be filed away into the annals of a genre. Those bands that effortlessly move in and out of different sounds, dueling vibes, and various inspirations genuinely bring truth to power on how all our music is connected, when boiled down to bare bones, in some way. I vividly remember walking into Repo Records on South Street in Philadelphia and asking where they were filing their albums of The Cult. The young man at the register said, “Did you try Rock? Did you try New Wave? Did you try Goth? Did you try Punk?” Ironically, that truly sums up my love affair with The Cult, a band that even the legendary Repo Records could not successfully classify!
Enter Sunblaze Lane. The next band to dropkick the walls of conformity and live in a space all their own. A loud & local band from right here in the Delaware Valley, Sunblaze Lane consists of Nick Hopton(Lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Addison Scott(Rhythm guitar &bass), Justin Smith(Lead guitar), and John Lamplugh(Drums). All while Nate Frey does the mixes and masters the tracks. This quartet of talent echoes the sounds of ghosts of Rock n’ Roll past with a fresh take and enough energy to be bottled and sold, all on its own.
The band recently released their latest single, “The Dreamer” in the beginning of the summer. The song gives you over three minutes of a raucous driving beat and downstroke chords akin similar to Dropkick Murphy’s music. And yet the flavors of classic Rock, hardcore, and nu metal permeate through the lead guitar work and vocals, all at once. Moreover, the essence of this song is remarkably uplifting, like you are being cordially invited to a musical celebration personally by the band.
Hopton, who writes all the lyrics and melodies for the band, had this to say about the bolt of positivity through the cavalcade of riffs. “It is an uplifting song with a message of finally ‘waking up to be the best version of you that you can be.” ‘
Waking Up is truly an understatement. The song practically dares you to not jump along, wherever you stand, to its fuel-driven tempo while preparing to take on the world.
The future is bright for Sunblaze Lane. In a world where everyone and everything needs to fit into a box, a label, a category, or a demographic, the band continues choosing a potpourri of sounds with layers of awesomeness to spare.
