Tradition Meets Competition
by Emily Meenan
Coming up on Saturday, October 6th is Philadelphia’s International Dragon Boat Festival. Dragon boat racing is the world’s fastest growing water sport. With twenty people moving in perfect unison inside of an elaborately designed Chinese dragon boat, the races are quite a sight to see. This year’s festival is part of a series of races that determines which crew teams earn bragging rights and get to represent the US in Club Crew World Championships. Both corporate and community crews will be competing right here in Philly. People of all ages can come out to the Schuylkill River race course in Fairmount Park to participate, volunteer, or just to watch. There will be events going on all day from 7AM to 5PM, including tons of races and lots of great food being served. Not only will the paddlers in beautiful boats be awesome to look at, but the air itself will be beautiful since this event is a “Smoke Free Philly” event. There’s still time to take part in this incredibly unique event! You can find out more at www.philadragonboatfestival.com!
