Odessa’s newest EP All Things hit streaming platforms on November 15th of this year.
“All Things” is the first song and does a great job of creating a haunting, but a dream-like atmosphere that immediately pulls listeners into her world. The rise and fall of tension in the lyrics and instrumentation are very ear-pleasing.
“Live On” brings listeners in with a very flowing and rhythmic dynamic. Her lyrics fall off her tongue with such ease. The harmonies throughout the song are placed very strategically on the accented words and phrases.
The next song in the EP is “Thunder”, which was a personal favorite. The R&B-like vibe is a nice change of direction. This is the rawest and most stripped-down song of all. Listening to the song it’s very easy to feel the emotional touch that Odessa has added. The instrumental breakdown rises into the peak of the song and is followed by the fall of the familiar melody in the verses of the song. The element of this rhythmic tapping that starts the song is also what brings the song to its end.
“Don’t Care” has this dreamy feeling to it, and the lyrics come off as spoken word poetry because of how well it all blends throughout the song. Though there is this feeling of vulnerability in her words, there is also this sense of hope for people listening to her music.
Both “Full Circle” and “Paradise” lighten up the mood, which makes the placement in the middle of the EP a very smart move on her part. “Full Circle” has a very relaxing feel to it, while the latter plays into the strong feelings that are brought on by love. “Lost My Head” is about giving up our passions and dreams for someone else, only to realize that we were blinded by love, whereas “Hard As I Try” is representative of the push and pull of what I felt was at the heart of the EP.
“Sunshine” has this great way of interpreting perspective on past situations which makes for a very bold statement in the EP. “Tipton” and “Disco Ball” flow so well with one another which creates for such a beautiful send-off.
All Things as a whole is such a beautiful and open collection of songs. There is so much emotional tension that Odessa’s captures so elegantly and I would love to hear what else she has for us in store!
