Let’s face it, there’s no other rating you could possibly give for this pop powerhouse’s debut 15-song album releasing tomorrow on Epic Records. Nominated for two Grammy Awards (Record of the Year and Song of the Year) before her album even debuts and selling out almost every one of her 17 U.S. tour dates is one for the record books. Plus, Trainor just turned 21. Can you imagine what she’ll accomplish in the next five years?
Trainor’s debut single, “All About That Bass”, was released last summer and became one of the best selling singles of all time, topping the charts in 58 countries. As an unknown (at the time) artist this is the personification of a dream coming true. I must admit, when I first was hearing whispers about this song, I just assumed it’s meaning was literal since I’ve had Puretone’s “Addicted To Bass” stuck in my head since the 90s. I never imagined it’d be a female empowerment/love-you-body anthem. You go girl!
Inspired by doo-wop, reggae and hip-hop, Title incorporates all of these styles packaged neatly in bubblegum pop wrapping. The new single, “Lips Are Movin”, just went platinum and is a catchy pop/hip-hop tune that showcases Trainor’s singing and songwriting talents well. She doesn’t take herself too seriously and is spunky and confident- what’s not to love?
“Dear Future Husband” has Trainor explaining to her non-existent future spouse what she expects of him and “Close Your Eyes” is one of those songs that every woman can relate to. The lyrics speak (again) to her significant other chiding him not to call her a friend and she expects at this point to have the relationship defined or she’s walking. The themes of Title are mostly about young love and what you need to do in order to get and keep it. Trainor wrote or co-wrote every track on this album and even got John Legend to guest on “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”.
Meghan Trainor is no one-hit wonder and damn straight she’s all about that bass. Me, too.
