Singer/songwriter and producer, Kacy Hill, shares her sophomore record, Is It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again. This album is a collection of memories of her own growth from when she was first signed at the age of 19, to now, and all the transcending moments in between. Hill finds herself as both a person and an artist, and her journey is illustrated in the lyrics of her songs.
To open up the album is the track, “To Someone Else,” a song with a futuristic perspective. The doubled harmonies and vocals make the song feel larger than life, and really adds a layer of spaciousness to the song. There’s a wonderful balance in the rise and fall of the song and in the actual spectrum of frequencies that she uses.
Another song that shows a ton of balance within itself is “Much Higher.” There’s an ethereal approach to the song, along with a very catchy melody to follow along with. The next song, “Just To Say,” creates a more laid-back feel for the album. This song really highlights the interesting and unique tone that brings her voice to life. This song became a favorite for me because there is a lot of strength in the vulnerability of her vocals and the song as a whole.
“Porsche” is another huge highlight for the album. It’s catchy and moving, and there’s a lot more under the surface of the song to explore. If you’re anything like me, you listen to a song on repeat until you can sing along, and you find something new to love about it with every listen, and I think those are the best kinds of songs.
Her next song “I Believe In You” is one that I had actually covered before for another project I was involved in. I love the feel of the song, but hearing it within the context of the album really brings the song to a whole new level. There’s a ton of fluidity between the songs and ideas to make them connect from one to the next as neatly as possible. flow as neatly as possible.
These next couple of songs bring an element of intimacy to them, making them feel a little more personal than the others. “Everybody’s Mother” has a beautifully written melody that we get to follow along with, along with some lyrics that can relate to the average listener. “Told Me” is a dynamically-evolving song that takes you on a different kind of journey than the other songs. There’s a hint of some R&B influence that drives this song as well.
Another song that shines when it comes to the melodic contour is “Unkind.” The song is fun to sing, but still unique in its own way. There’s a ton of build-up to create even more tension within the song and makes for an intriguing listen that really takes you somewhere.
The next song “Six” is another great song in terms of the lyrics The song structure is very well done, and there’s a ton of movement in the song, and a beautiful story to tell. “Palladium” also shares those same great moments, with great detail to the post-production effects in both her vocals and in the instrumentation for the song. Closing out the record is her song “Dinner.” This song highlights her point of view for the album very well and brings all of her music to a beautiful ending.
Kacy Hill creates a beautiful story in her music that is brought to life in her lyrics in Is It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again?. She has a way of pushing past all the fluff to bring you the real and raw story to the forefront. While her perspective can be a bit too narrow, she is telling her own personal story through her much, I can still find a way to connect with it, and respect her as a musician for it.
