Rising pianist and award-winning classical musician, Kimberly Hou, shares her debut EP, Opus One. The San Francisco-based artist shares, “I wrote my first EP, Opus One, to offer different perspectives of experiencing various chapters of life. Reminiscing about moments of beauty, wonder, and loss – yet emerging ever stronger, cherishing life and loved ones even more from the present moment onwards.”
The opening track is “Field of Memories.” It begins with a soft melody that gradually becomes something greater then slows down again and creates greater dynamics in the song. Hou is gifted at using dynamics to create emotion in the song; not only within “Field of Memories,” but also with the other songs on the EP.
“Reflections” exemplifies how classical music can be exciting. Creating a dynamic song can be difficult, but Hou is able to effectively show how changing the way you deliver a note, whether it be via an instrument or vocally, can dynamically reshape the entire song. The ups and downs of “Reflections” create emotion and intensity that continue throughout the entire 3:38 of the track.
“Dancing In Time” has a very classic, ballroom dance track feel. I can imagine a ballroom with ballroom gowns and classically tailored suits with shiny black shoes. Though the 1:50 running time is brief, the song doesn’t waste any time creating its elegant own feel. The timing is exact, calculated, and proper.
The final track on the EP is “For My Love.” This song resembles the musical score to a classic Great Depression love story. The song is decorated with delicate tones, classic time signatures, and moods.
