Ian Randall Thornton is an indie/folk singer/songwriter from Norfolk, Virginia. His latest album, Wide Open, is out now. While this new album has some essence of what he is known for, he takes this as a time to explore different ideas and push his limits musically.
“Hiatus” was his most recent release that creates a very ethereal and freeing atmosphere. I love the amount of movement in the instrumentation and the vocals. His music is moving and emotional, but intimate and powerful. He has so many layers that add more depth and feeling to the song. His next song, “North & South”, has some shining moments in the vocals, but sometimes they were overshadowed by the rest of the instrumentation.
Another thing that is very present in his music is his incredible bass range as a singer. He hits these notes that resonate so well in the music, and at times, could even sub the bass parts in the music. “It Feels Like The Other Day” and “River In The Rain” are other examples of his beautiful songwriting skills. There are moments of intimacy mixed with fun, rhythmic instrumentation to add a little more variety.
A highlight of the album for me is his song “Written Down.” There is a touch of soul that is mixed into his indie-folk style which I really took a liking too. Conceptually, I love this song. It really makes you sit there and think about the deeper meaning the song is portraying. The song to close the album is “Rest” which is a moving instrumental piece. It’s captivating and draws you in for every second it’s playing.
I always fall in love with music that tugs at my heart and makes me feel something more than just enjoying a song. Thorton’s music is captivating and emotionally stimulating, while not being overly complicated. This was a phenomenal listen and I hope to hear more from him in the near future!
