Singer-songwriter Resurrection Fern is part of the wave of artists that have taken their live performances beyond the traditional setting, and into the computers, televisions, and cell phones of their global fanbase. Live streaming platforms like Twitch.tv have it possible for artists to just this.
Indie-folk, singer-songwriter, Resurrection Fern, delivers a beautiful, stripped-down acoustic guitar EP on Fern. It’s clear that her true strengths are her beautiful, breathy, yet raw voice paired with her relatable lyrics.
The EP opens with the track “Coffee”, a track reminiscent of pop/singer-songwriter artist, Ingrid Michaelson, paired with the rawness of Alanis Morrissette’s vocals. “Coffee” showcases Fern’s songwriting abilities and the ability to create emotive and personal songs.
Don’t think you’ll be getting a dose of in-your-face, angst tracks, however. Serene, ethereal, and gentle, Fern also showcases her songwriting abilities on the EP. The second track of the EP, “Savanna”, is reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan, as Fern sings “oh Savanna, heard it’s getting cold in Indiana/oh Savanna, meet me halfway there in Indiana..” and her lyricism: “stranded at sea, with nothing left but rosary/you say God has a plan for me/well, I believe in God, but not in destiny…”
Compared to Fern’s last album, Beyond The Trees, this record is “quintessentially Fern.” Fern is a showcase of acoustic guitar, ethereal vocals, paired with real authenticity. Beyond The Trees had very big instrumentation and a multi-layered sound. On Fern, it’s much more simple, with a stripped-down, acoustic guitar sound.
The third track on the record gives off a very haunting vibe. “Hi Lo” features Fern’s vocal range and a sound that strays away from the opening track, “Coffee.”
We return to that gorgeous tone of Fern’s vocals paired with the acoustic guitar sound on “Siren”, while on “Wayside” re-visits the haunting vibe of “Hi Lo.”
“The Way That You” is a beautiful duet between Fern and Ub1K and almost reminds me of a duet that sounds similar to Sufjan Stevens.
Definitely take a listen to Resurrection Fern if you are looking for new music. Her voice is angelic, with a rich, warm tone that melts your ears.
