Future Thieves’ newest EP, Emotional Cost, recently hit all streaming platforms on November 22nd!
The different mixes of EDM elements, psychedelic rock, and smooth vocals make for such an incredible clean sounding EP. There is so much radio potential for this band with their use of current trends in music while still keeping their sound original.
The EP opens with a short instrumental laced with EDM influences, and a very free moving tempo, which is a nice change from what most artists do.
The track “Get Up” has elements of spacey and ambient sound effects that really makes for a unique listen. The vocals glide through the song so well, while also keeping up with the energy in the instrumentation. On “My Body” and “I Don’t Think I’m Okay”, they also deliver the same in terms of energy and do a great job of not overdoing it. Their use of very grounded strong beats makes it almost impossible to not bop your head to the beat.
“Make a Run For It” is on the slower-paced side, which is a great chase of pace for the EP. The placement of this song gives the listener a chance to wind down and take a breath before being brought back to that high intensity. Even though the song is slower than the others, it still grounded in terms of rhythm, while also adding the techno and electronic sounds to keep the tempo from feeling too slow.
The last two songs, “Your Garden” and “Out the Other Side”, are personal favorites. The way that the transition was almost undetectable was amazingly done. Like the rest of the EP, that strong beat follows through till the very end and brings back familiar and catchy repetition from the other songs in the set.
Overall, the use of modern post-production and the mix of different genres really make this EP a favorite of mine. The band as a whole also gave a chance for the instrumentals to shine through, instead of letting the vocals overpower everything. Everything felt so carefully planned out, and without a doubt, made for a sensational listen!
