Some Paranoia
Reviewed by: Tiffany Taylor
Idle Bloom is busting out of Nashville with their debut EP Some Paranoia which is full of reverb and rhythmic melodies that are here to capture the hearts of everyone. They have built a story with Some Paranoia, giving contrasted song after song that all come together with a beautiful ending. Not claiming one genre has definitely played to their favor because it has allowed the group to explore their sound and direction. Although this is just the beginning for Idle Bloom, it certainly showcases what they are capable of and gives a perfect entrance to the potential they can have. Olivia and Callan have vocals that project a haunting yet atmospheric vibe, something that shows how truly unique they are.
The EP opens up with a guitar melody from the track “No Body/No Control” followed by a lyrical ballad from both voices of Olivia and Callan. The opening leaves the listener with wandering thoughts, unsure of where the direction plans on going. However as the track builds, so does the anticipation. Immediately following into “Some Paranoia”, it opens up with crashing cymbals and methodical guitars, certainly not where you expected to go, but an appropriate second page to their story.
Keeping in mind that this is an EP, only a twenty minute escape, it is just enough to set Idle Bloom on the map. Their inspiration is derived from a melting pot of musical geniuses- Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey, and The Prodigy to name a few. These inspirations contribute to this indie yet psychedelic vibe. Each member of the four piece is from a different musical background which is overtly apparent in Some Paranoia to the highest degree.
Songs like “Old Bone” and “Pride Line” breathe notes of an 80’s feel with a new modern rocker chic. It is hard to believe the songs on this EP were achievable in the slightest but I guarantee you cannot find a group out there as interesting as Idle Bloom right now. Along with their sound being the star of this mix, their lyrics hold just as important as the rest of the EP. As far as lyrics go however, let your ears listen carefully and guide you through the journey Idle Bloom’s Some Paranoia has created.
