The Wolf Of Wall Street Soundtrack

Compilations are the extended family Christmas of the music world. You’ll get what you like and you’ll get what you do. They’re more about musical gems than album cohesion. A greatest hits record with a severe hangover, if you will. Track one “Mercy Mercy” is like vomiting – it isn’t great but you’ll do it anyway. “Bang Bang” on the other has a delicious build up into the ‘bang bang’ chorus and a delightful little rise and fall as it saunters on into the next drink. The type of song that makes you want drink 50s whisky and have an overly cautious dance party in your period house in front of the fire.
This record exists to shift units. And while thematically it’s in line with itself the entire time, it doesn’t offer anything particularly earth shattering. When a track ends, what comes next isn’t going to surprise, shock or scare you – but it’s not the Misfits. “Double Dutch” follows suit and drops into the atmosphere of filthy rich don’t-know-what-to-do-with-myself emotion so let’s seek out dancing school girls (hey, I didn’t write the track).
“Meth Lab Zoso Sticker” wins out as track of the album and is a lot to listen to. There isn’t much on this track not to like and it brings change pace from the formerly mentioned while teasingly ducking and diving away from the parameters set by the rest of the songs. It wants to break form and it does, just not enough to be an outcast.
