FREE and ALL AGES!
Coming up this Saturday is the first of Radio 104.5’s five free Summer Block Parties. Each event features both big name artists and local gems, starting this week with Family of the Year, Atlas Genius, and Jackson Kingsley.
Headlining the show, Family of the Year is a five piece band from Los Angeles. Taking their name quite literally, they work together impeccably and feature multiple voices and sounds blended together in their music. After opening for Ben Folds and releasing their debut album in 2009, a whirlwind of success began for them. They released their most recent album, Loma Vista, in July of 2012 and their single “Hero” has reached #16 on the Billboard Alternative Chart. Family of the Year is touring this summer, but their only stop in Philadelphia is this Saturday!
Atlas Genius are a trio from Adelaide, South Australia. They have formed their career much differently than most bands do, building their very own studio before playing their first show. Following suit, they also have a unique sound. Being influenced by Death Cab for Cutie, The Police and Beck, their music grabs the attention of many audiences. “If So”, the single off of their 2013 album, When it was Now, has been featured in the video game FIFA ‘13. After playing this Saturday’s block party, Atlas Genius will embark on tour, hopping from Germany to the West coast, with plenty of stops in between.
Jackson Kingsley of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey is the local act opening up Saturday’s party. With influences from Kings of Leon, The Strokes and Phoenix, this five piece band brings with them a unique and entrancing sound. Jackson Kingsley isn’t currently touring, but check them out this weekend and keep your eyes peeled for more local shows!
With a lineup like this, Saturday’s block party is sure to get crowded quickly! Show up early- perhaps a brunch at P.Y.T. Burger or Kings Oak? Any of the restaurants at the Piazza will hit the spot and fill you up for a day of music. And the earlier you’re there, the better- check out what the vendors and sponsors, like State Farm, Vitamin Water, and Max’s Brew Bar, have to offer! Remember, this is the first block party of the summer so come now, know what to expect and return for the next four shows.
