Young Lovers

There’s nothing like a band that knows itself. The Mars Patrol’s newest EP, Young Lovers, evokes emotions and images that make its title ring true. There is a whole relationship in these five songs. And just like any relationship, there are emotional ups and downs, making Young Lovers a very kinetic piece.
We start off with our hearts beating rapidly along to the pulse quickening “Here We Go,” an anthemic tribute to love that is exciting and new. Things get rougher, emotionally, in “Stop Pushing You Away,” where vocalist Davina Divine trills with the vulnerability of Natalie Imbruglia, but with the power of Gwen Stefani or Cyndi Lauper. Her dynamic voice matches the eclectic mix of genre and instrumentation sampled on the entire EP. While the backbone of The Mars Patrol’s sound is nostalgic pop rock like the Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty, there is a healthy dash of country, and soulful singer/songwriter piano chords. The fantastic “I Wonder” also features a moving string section.
The final and titular track summarizes the thesis of Young Lovers perfectly. It covers a wide range of the tumultuous feelings that young love gives us. Anyone would be lucky to have The Mars Patrol as the soundtrack to their life.
