Feel Something

The History of Apple Pie’s new album, Feel Something, opens on a warm, celestial, vintage note. Singer Stephanie Min’s understated vocals lay nicely against the spinning, sunny instrumentals. Little did I know, the album’s second track, “Tame”, would sum the rest of it up for me. The album’s instrumentation channels the 60s and 70s, while somehow vibing with 90s alternative, and Min’s singing is calm, stable, and…boring, a little bit.
The album continues similarly. Min’s vocals stay breathy and mild, the guitars twang and glow, and the rest of the instrumentation maintains an artful, vintage demeanor. The History of Apple Pie created an album that reminisces previous eras and calls upon their best elements. My only criticism is the similarity between tracks. The album is artistic, thoughtful, and I love the use of retro elements. However, it’s a little bit boring by the middle of the album, and I’d like to hear Min mix it up a bit. I’d compare the band to Silversun Pickups, but even they add interesting vocal elements and stray from the mildness. It was a fun, retro listen for music snobs like myself, but the audience member in me looks beyond the vintage and sees nothing but an okay, monotonous album.
