Savannah King is a young singer/songwriter from Buffalo, NY. She was 13-years-old when she found her mother’s guitar behind her couch and never stopped playing since. When I asked her which songs she first started playing she responds with “a lot of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Cranberries and Sarah McLachlan,” which exemplifies her array of music tastes from an early age and the fact that this girl does not mess around.
King’s Alphabet Project is a collection of covers released every Sunday at 1pm. It features a song each week for every letter of the alphabet and currently she is on the letter “I’.
“I came up with the idea of The Alphabet Project because I love playing acoustic versions of songs especially when they aren’t traditionally acoustic,” says King. You can see this in her unique acoustic cover of “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath which has previously been featured on the Buzzfeed list of “13 Mellow Acoustic Covers of Hard Rock Songs”.
“There are so many artists out there who I really respect, and I wanted to find a creative way to compile all of these great songs into something that people can continually look forward to each week,” explains King.
She often gets asked if she knows what songs she will cover for the more difficult letters such as “X”. King already has it all mapped out and although she would not divulge any upcoming songs before their release, she did mention that there would be a few brand new original songs in there.
For the letter “F” she released a new song of hers called “Fight” which is really beautiful and shows where her real talent lies. “I’m a songwriter at heart. I love being a storyteller.” One of her lines in “Fight” reads, “We are only in the dark, long enough to appreciate the light” and you can really feel the power and emotion behind the words when she sings them aloud.
“Only recently have I started writing about my own experiences,” she says, as previously she focused more on the stories people would tell her and the things she would see because, “…they may never get told in any other way. Traveling around, I’ve met so many different people and those are the stories I like to tell.”
King is currently keeping busy with not only The Alphabet Project but also going into the studio this fall to work on her third EP. She hopes to follow it with another tour next summer so be sure to watch out for this young evolving songwriter. She will be playing a show this upcoming Thursday, August 8th, for her ‘Tiny Tour 2013 at Chaplin’s Café in Spring City, PA.
