Thursday night was a sold out show for Johnny Brenda’s as The Vaselines performed. Touring all the way from Glasgow, Scotland, and coming out with a new album recently, they sounded as original and as vibrant as ever.
The band began in the late 1980s and broke up shortly after the release of their first album. Forming again almost 20 years later, they have been back in action for just a few years, but are really putting the gear in drive lately.
Being an influence to Nirvana, The Vaselines’ original sound and resonate lyrics kept everyone in trance before, during and after the performance. Starting out with some newer tunes such as “Sex with an X” and “High Tide Low Tide”, they kept it authentic and fun with both their lyrics and good spirits. During the performance, they kept the vibe upbeat by making jokes (especially Frances McKee, female vocalist) as Eugene Kelly (male vocalist) wittily played along.
They then went on to play some old time favorites, such as “Jesus Don’t Want Me For a Sunbeam” and had us all in a rare form of memory. Johnny Brenda’s was the perfect place to experience this unique and possibly one of a kind performance. Even down to the staff. At the entry, my man “G” kept it real and friendly which you don’t always see at these kind of events.
Let’s just apologize if you missed the performance, but check out the pictures and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that these guys keep making music!
