Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”, or Guns N Roses’ “November Rain”… Some music videos are ones to remember. Next Thursday, Permanent Wave Philly, partnering up with Incite, Excite, is hosting a local music video screening, and will focus on local independent musicians and filmmakers, for an entertaining night. Permanent Wave Philly is offering us a nice and exciting alternative to our typical music video experience, sitting alone on our laptop.
For those of you who might not be aware if this, Permanent Wave Philly is a non-profit focusing on creating networking opportunities and building a community of feminist artists and activists.
“We seek to challenge gender inequality not only in all forms of the arts,” says Candy, active member of Permanent Wave Philly, “but also in politics, our personal lives, and anywhere else it seems necessary. We want to continue what was started generations ago by creating a revolutionary arts movement and community that’s relevant to women and non-binary folks, LGBTQ-identified people, people of color, and anyone who has been excluded from the subjective mainstream norms.”
Working actively to support feminism, the people at Permanent Wave Philly like to remind us that it’s not just about women.
“Obviously we support women in music and the arts in general,” says Candy, “but it’s so much more than that. We want people of all genders, of all backgrounds, to be able to create, perform, and organize. We want to highlight and support anyone and everyone who’s not getting the attention and credit they deserve, whether it’s due to sexism, racism, homophobia, and/or other reasons. On local and DIY levels, people know that women are capable of creating. But if you take a look at who’s in the lineup of the shows, who’s organizing the shows, and even who’s in the audience, you can see who’s the most represented. We seek to challenge the straight white cis dude club.”
Permanent Wave Philly is constantly hosting events that are both fun and educating. Keep an eye out on their upcoming events at https://www.facebook.com/permanentwavephilly/
“We want to create events with performers and topics that reflect its audience,” says Candy. “The audience in Philly who consume music and art is not homogeneous, and it’s necessary to acknowledge that, and put that knowledge into creating and curating events. When we create our events, we do it intentionally, with purpose and thought. We also put on events not only to have fun, see great art, talk about important issues, and listen to great music, but also to help local organizations in Philly. For example, we’ve done benefits for Girls Rock Philly, Women Against Abuse, and the MOMobile program of Maternity Care Coalition.”
Permanent Wave Philly is hosting their next event on Thursday at A-Space, “Sight & Sound”, and they are really excited for you to come out. The screening will feature the work of Moor Mother Goddess, Shakai Mondai, Little Strike, GhetttoSongBird and Sad Hana, five amazing artists from our very own Philly.
“We’ve hosted a number of music shows and film screenings in the past and there’s so much support and energy around those, but we noticed a lack of programming and a lack of conversation around music videos. Our aim with this music video screening and Q&A is to partner with Incite, Excite to drive conversation around independent musicians collaborating with filmmakers to make their own videos. In a time where video production is more accessible than ever and with free platforms like Youtube or a basic Vimeo account, artists are given even more of a voice and a chance to reach people that they maybe can’t at a show.”
Join Permanent Wave Philly and come celebrate with them the art of the music video and the talent of our local artists.
