Of the video, Tehran says, “My vision was to unite our community to collectively process traumatic experiences of systematic violence through a creative practice. No matter the discrimination and oppression, we will fight the system and create our own place in this world regardless of the struggle. Because alienation can build a nation.”
Tehran grew up an atheist in a Muslim household in the the small Christian town of Jonkoping, Sweden. Her parents immigrated from Iran after the 1970 Revolution. Her father served in the military on the frontlines of the Iran-Iraq war. Much of Tehran’s music reflects on her family’s history and the lasting effects of the war.
Her father’s voice opens Dozakh, as he re-tells a horrible battle that he and his other troops endured. At 12-years-old, Tehran’s desire for radical expression and activism began. She sang in the only punk band in her small town and those experiences continue to permeate throughout her music today.
