Gifted with a soulful voice and killer guitar skills, Patrick Droney, should also be recognized for his ability to deliver rock-solid, pop-rock melodies filled with real-life lyricism. On his new EP, State of The Heart, Droney does just that.
The 6-song EP opens with the track, “Right With You.” The song opens with just him singing softly but quickly changes its tempo. It’s incredible how Droney is able to craft a song where he knows where to change tempo. Following that, it then opens up into an ’80s pop-rock anthem, think Phil Collins.
Not only is Droney skillful with the guitar, but also with the piano. Droney‘s soulful vocals, emotive lyricism, and songwriting skills make him a force to be reckoned with. “Chasing You” is a beautiful, soulful song that shows off Droney‘s falsetto and it’s absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of a super soulful Mat Kearney. The emotion in his voice as he sings at the end of this track just gives me chills. You can hear the pain and his life experiences in his voice.
On “The Wire,” Droney delivers a song that blends infectious, pop melodies with soulful vocals and a radio-friendly chorus. You can’t help but
The EP’s lead single, “Glitter,” is a beautiful, yet heartbreaking track about love and grief. “We don’t get to choose who we get to love and who we’re going to lose” is a line that absolutely struck me in the heart because it was relatable. He sings, no one really dies if the love remains. I’ve listened to this song a billion times since I first wrote the news post about this song, but after really reading the lyrics, it gave me chills. These lyrics are like a paintbrush painting an image of my life before me.
The last track of the EP, “Passerby,” is such an infectious, upbeat track with Droney‘s vocals at the forefront. It almost gives the listener a nostalgic feel of young love.
This is such a beautiful EP with solid, pop-rock songs about love, grief, and more.
