Sir Paul McCartney announces he will be releasing the third album in a trilogy of classic albums titled McCartney III. The all-new, all-Paul album will be released on December 11 on Capitol Records.
McCartney was released in 1970, McCartney II released in 1980, and now, McCartney III will be released right in time for Christmas 2020.
2020 marks 50 years since McCartney released his self-titled, first solo album. Featuring Paul writing every song, playing every instrument, and recording every song, McCartney is a timeless album featuring some of the greatest songs of all-time like “Maybe I’m Amazed,” “Every Night” and “Lovely Linda.”
In the 1970s, came his second band, Wings. The band dominated the charts, stages, and the airwaves of the world, earning multiple #1 songs, sold-out world tours, and multi-million selling albums. In the 1980s, we saw him trek out on a solo run. The next four decades would see Paul‘s “iconic and legendary status” grow exponentially. His solo albums, Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt, Pipes of Peace, Flaming Pie, Memory Almost Full, and New. His huge live shows took over the world and set the World Record for the “largest attendance at a concert.”
Fifty-four years since The Beatles first took the #1 spot on the Billboard Album Charts, Paul‘s Egypt Station, would also become a #1 Paul McCartney album. Crazy as it is, it’s only been two years since the release of Egypt Station, and only last year that his Freshen Up tour hit the road before COVID paused all live music indefinitely.
He hadn’t planned on releasing an album in 2020, but soon found himself fleshing out some musical sketches and creating more new ones.
Speaking about III, Paul said: “I was living lockdown life on my farm with my family and I would go to my studio every day. I had to do a little bit of work on some film music and that turned into the opening track and then when it was done I thought what will I do next? I had some stuff I’d worked on over the years but sometimes time would run out and it would be left half-finished so I started thinking about what I had. Each day I’d start recording with the instrument I wrote the song on and then gradually layer it all up, it was a lot of fun. It was about making music for yourself rather than making music that has to do a job. So, I just did stuff I fancied doing. I had no idea this would end up as an album.”
