Hungry Ghosts

OK Go’s new album, Hungry Ghosts, is a delectable piece of sugary indie-pop. With lyrics that, albeit sometimes nonsensical, tell a slightly deeper story than the synth-heavy instrumentals let on at first listen, the album’s substance is highly digestible.
The whole thing is a sweet throwback, and is comparable to the works of many different artists. While track two, “The Writings On The Wall”, says 80’s alt-pop to me, the band gives off a more Vampire Weekend vibe in the next song, followed by a Prince type tune. This multi-influence assortment may sound like a potpourri collection of songs, but the instrumentation remains similarly produced throughout the album, with dance-able beats, heavy synth, and generally poppy melodies. However, each track seems to be an experimentation with different kinds of music and elements, employing at different times a dance-y bass, a vocal stutter, an orchestral sample, and even video game noises, to name a few.
While each track meshes with the others, the style varies and makes for an interesting and eclectic album. It’s definitely a far deviation from their earlier releases, and that makes for an interesting and captivating listen.
