Monk Parker’s How The Spark Loves The Tinder is perfect music for fall — it’s heart wrenching, mellow, and low-key. It could be good music to curl up by a roaring fire while reading a book or just relaxing.
How The Spark Loves The Tinder opens with the track mellow track “Sadly Yes,” a song that speaks about a woman that he wants — he sings: “Sadly no, I don’t want her / I want you”. It is a beautiful, moving song about love, new beginnings, endings.
The track “The Happy Hours” describes happy hours downtown in Rapid City. Parker paints an image of what the happy hours are like there for people who aren’t actually able to be there. “So bright the tiny stars / Strobe lights twining / Slow and pretty / In Rapid City / Darkly darkly the happy hours / Sparkling sparkling the bar lights / Smiling hidingly /”
Overall, the record is very sweet, mellow, and perfect for curling up by the fire, with a book, for fall. Mr. Parker’s arrangements with the guitar are absolutely beautiful and enthralling.
