The lo-fi duo, Lowertown, released their new EP, The Gaping Mouth, out now. The EP features seven tracks with a similar feel and production sound, making this sound a signature of the band. Lowertown features the duo Avsha Weinberg and Olivia Osby. The two met in high school math class at 16. Now they are 19 and have been making music together ever since.
“Debris” and “Sunburnt” have a more upbeat feel than the other tracks on the album, but they still fit the sound of the rest of the album. While the rest of the songs have a similar sound, listeners would be able to point out that the songs were Lowertown because they have similar mixes of instruments.
“It’s our most honest and interesting work to date,” said Weinberg in a press release. This statement definitely rings true.
The stories of each of the songs resound without having to explicitly say everything in the lyrics. The instrumentals and the overall production and feel of the songs tell each story, which can be difficult for musicians to do. The lyrics and the softness of the voices pull listeners in to add a personal feel, like listeners are being told a secret about the artist’s lives.
Weinberg also said that this is their most mature work to date, citing that most of their songs in their past have been sad. While the songs on this album do have a melancholy feel, they are not necessarily sad. The maturity and the weight of carrying this maturity come through, but it more conveys life experiences instead of specific emotions.
“The Gaping Mouth,” the title track, is one of the most relatable and personal songs on the album. The lyrics are unique, especially their take on an old phrase (“You are the iris of my eye”). The song has a definite story to it that tells of the process of growing up and learning to take on more responsibility.
Listeners who love Olivia Rodrigo’s music will want to check this pair out. Their songs have a similar feel and the lyrics cover similar topics. Overall, this album is excellent. The mixing is really clean and the storytelling of the lyrics is mature and draws listeners in to want to know more. This is the perfect album to put on to just chill out to.
