The Texas-based psych-Americana duo, Leon III, trying to stay afloat, much like many other families and individuals across the state of Texas, during this winter season. With that said, they are excited to share their new song from their upcoming new sophomore record, Antlers In Velvet, due out for release on March 5, 2021.
The new album showcases the duo’s “extreme depth and genius musicianship” that they hold. Upon listening to the duo’s new song, “Skeletal Pines,” you can hear that those sentiments are apparent. The duo, Andy Stepanian (vocals, guitar, keyboards, piano, and omnichord), and Mason Brent (guitar, bass, vocals, banjo), were both members of another band called Wrinkle Head Mules, a long-running band based out of Virginia, that had a substantial, cult-like following, and were also founders of the Austin apparel brand, Howler Brothers.
On “Skeletal Pines,” it bends genres from psych-rock to indie-Americana. They’re able to skillfully layer 70’s-like rock guitars layered over psychedelic solos and dramatic drums. They create a sound that screams 70’s rock and 70’s arena rock.
Both artists grew up in the Richmond, Virginia area, where mostly country and roots music made up much of their musical development. The duo has always been drawn to the progressive ethos of psychedelic artists, as well as the left-of-center artists folk like Vic Chestnutt and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.
I think this record is going to be a great record for this season just upon listening to “Skeletal Pines.”
