LANY

There will always be bands that earn well-deserved recognition organically and some that just simply get lucky. With indie pop trio, LANY, it’s the former. The trio, comprised of Paul Klein (lead vocals/keys/guitar), Jake Goss (drums/sampler), and Les Priest (keys/guitar/backup vocals), began in early to mid 2014 when the trio uploaded two tracks to SoundCloud. The release of their debut EP, Acronymns, and initial single “ILYSB”, earned significant attention online.
On “The Breakup”, the band channels indie pop and R&B sounds that sound familiar, almost similar to artists like Twin Shadow and Panama Wedding, while maintaining their own identity. “The Breakup” is an ultra-hip track that combines the best of indie pop with raw, emotional lyrics and smooth vocals.
On June 28th, music producer and DJ, Zane Lowe, premiered “Super Far”, the last preview from the band’s debut, as his radio show #WorldRecord on Beats 1. Klein’s emotionally honest and raw lyrics on “Super Far”, “I’m in love with someone/but I’m not sure/she can love someone back/the way they love her”, demonstrate the artist’s ability to draw from experiences in love, relationships, life, and more, while also setting the bar high for the trio’s future.
The track “ILYSB”, which was featured on Acronymns, and has helped generate a great deal of interest online leading up the release of the debut LP.
“Good Girls” is undeniably catchy with a stellar groove, a perfect summer song, with Klein singing, “good girls don’t exist/but I expected more than this”, about a significant other.
Overall, the 16-song collection is solid, but it’d be interesting to see how LANY can evolve and push their boundaries. The trio’s ability to blend different elements is remarkable and it’s difficult to really compare and contrast their material regardless of it sounding so familiar, yet so unknown. LANY is definitely an artist that should be on the ones to watch list over the rest of the year. With the trio’s natural ability to write raw, emotional lyrics layered over modern synths, guitars, and keyboards, LANY is bound for an incredibly bright future.
