Something ‘Bout Kreay
Reviewed by John Selwyn
Oakland City based “rapper”/party girl Natassia Zolot, best known as Kreayshawn, drops her full length after some overnight attention and overexposure thanks to the YouTube.
Her instantly catchy first single “Gucci Gucci” is approximately three minutes of Kreay talking shit on the girls who have, thanks to their parents’ credit cards, a little more spending power than she does, and other than a brief glimpse into her gentler side during “Summertime”, the product as a whole stays fixed to this path. The album, like the singles, is partially redeemed by slick production work thanks to some members of the Odd Future camp, and even a little thanks to Philly’s own wunderkind Diplo.
Kreay depicts the girl in high school that all of the other girls wanted as the leader of their Girl Gang because she just doesn’t give a shit about anything except having a good time. You get the immediate impression that even though she is a pint-sized Ghetto Princess she may actually pack a real punch. Then again, there is an emptiness to her threats. She isn’t actually going to burn your house down like “Left Eye”, and she may tempt you to come along and raise some hell on “Go Hard” but how hard are we willing to go when our fearless leader doesn’t even bother to write lyrics for the chorus, just a few “La La La’s”, hence her comfort in La La Land.
M.I.A’s last record may have totally sucked but at least she was trying to say something. There is no artistic statement here; Kreay isn’t playing a character in some attempt at social satire. “Somethin Bout Kreay” is a blunt (pun intended) party rap record and will most likely not have a follow up. She gets the party started and she’s doing something similar to the UK’s Lady Sovereign, just not nearly as well. Kreay is content to just have fun where she lives, a world of low expectations and with little to no consequences, but hey, at least she’s being honest about it.
