Musicians create music for different reasons. To express themselves, as an escape, simply because they enjoy music. Kat Dahlia does so because she wants to get a message out through her music and help people that hear it.
“I want something that really helps people, not something that is just cool to jam to on the surface,” says Dahlia. Dahlia wants to reach today’s listeners and help them see past the wordily desires we are often taught to want and reach for something more.
Dhalia is a female in a male dominated genre- rap. She doesn’t let it intimidate her at all. In fact, she see’s it as a wonderful help to her. “In some ways, it’s harder but in some ways it’s easier. You’re a female and there aren’t so many of us, it kind of gives a head start. All of the dudes are doing it and competing. At the end of the day I’m just making music. The only person I compete with is myself. Let them do what they like to do and I’ll do what I like to do.”
Dahlia’s passion for her craft has lead her to some of her best memories. For Dhalia, the best part of the journey with her music before putting it out to her fans is the creation, even before she signed with Vested in Culture/Epic Records, she loved that part. “My favorite memories are when I was in the studio in New York. The energy was just so amazing and there was so much love in the room.”
Dahlia’s album, My Garden, will be released this summer. “I feel like it’s long overdue and I’m very happy with the project we’ve put together. I’m so excited for fans to hear it.” The album has some interesting sounds, including a string orchestra in the track “I Love You.”
Dahlia is ready to kick off her tour and she’s excited for people to come out. B.B. King has always been her inspiration because of his performance. “He gives this energy that’s so amazing to watch. It’s very exchanging and you don’t get that all the time.”
Check out Kat and her band on the 17th at World Cafe Live. “The band that I’m bringing out and the sounds that we are creating are going to be a journey, something that people can be apart of. It’s going to be one huge jam session and a good time.”
