Pulses

Pop duo Karmin at last makes their full-length debut with Pulses. There is no denying the considerable talents of Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan. They write and perform music that people want to hear. Heidemann’s lack of hesitation to use her powerhouse voice to get weird or super fast or “jiggy with it.” Noonan’s voice is a joy to hear as well and is a perfect, calmer anchor to the turbulent Heidemann.
Pulses is an apt title. The album doesn’t let up for even a second; the pulse pumps from beginning to end. From the titular track to the solid singles, “Acapella” and “I Want It All,” through the mishmash of B-side club tunes to the stellar “Try Me On.” Of the two, “I Want It All” is the stronger single, with a retro disco feel reminiscent of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” Save for “Try Me On,” however, there isn’t really a “Brokenhearted” or “Hello” in the bunch. The aforementioned track is the only one that stands out in its use of every single strength the duo has. Heidemann’s power and speed and Noonan’s sweetness.
A lot of Pulses may be indistinguishable club fare, but Karmin has the charisma to keep you listening, and more importantly, dancing, regardless. They’re pure, unadulterated fun and that’s nothing to sneeze at.
