Crush Songs, the new solo album by Karen O, is intriguing. One listen is simply not enough to determine if Crush Songs is brilliant or an interesting moment of artistic expression by Karen O.
The majority of the music is a cross between acoustic and a throw back to the strong guitar use of folk music. The strong female vocals are almost hypnotizing in their precise cadence. It is the evocative lyrics, however, that prove to be the most effective element of the album, drawing listeners deep into each song.
Overall Crush Songs comes across as raw: rawly emotional and rawly bare of glamour, which is often how crushes feel at the time and how we remember them years later. Crush Songs deserves at least one listen, and if you’re currently going through the painful end of a crush, this could be your new favorite album.
