Jonathan Rado of Foxygen released his first solo LP. The 12-track debut is a little all over sound wise with roots in the psychedelic sounds. Rado’s vocals, as always, seem a little psychedelic and channels the 70s throughout the album. While not always the most appealing sound, the vocals were often purposefully distorted and in some tracks worked but in others was hard to handle.
Right from the get go the album utilizes the funky psychedelic drums. The beat is easy to pick up on and follow along, making “Seven Horses” a good listen despite the slightly weird lyrics. “I Wanna Feel It Now!!!” was one of the harder tracks on the album, a refreshing change but overwhelmed by the distortion of the vocals, taking away some of it’s greatness.
He utilized call and response vocals that worked nicely in “Hand in Mine” and “Looking 4a Girl Like U”. While not done much today it was a quirky touch that made the songs stand out from others on the album. “Oh Suzanna!” was a fun standout track on the album with upbeat energy and an entertaining theme of bands that seemingly must have influenced Rado.
Overall the album is a quirky addition to the genre with strong musicality and interesting song lyrics that push a listener further into the album.
