California’s indie/shoegaze quartet, Draag, releases a dreamy cover version of Vinyl Williams‘ “Lansing” as part of their Covers EP, out October 9.
The cover is the first in a series of songs shared by the band from their upcoming Covers EP. Each week the band will release a new track from the EP leading up to October 9. The project will also feature versions of songs by Deerhunter, Throbbing Gristle, Pinback, Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges, and Goon.
When COVID-19 began appearing in the news in late-February, the band’s plans for a summer tour were canceled. The group “decided we’d use the time we’d spend on the road to make this EP instead, sending stems back and forth to each other. The choice of songs to cover was very stream of consciousness – instinctually chosen from a combination of Twitter recommendations and artists that expand the definition of music to us.”
What originally began as a solo project from musician Adrian Acosta turned into much more. Trained as a mariachi singer by his norteño father, Acosta eventually began recruiting other musicians (Jessica Huang, Nick Kelley, Ray Montes, and Shane Graham) for what became Draag.
The band’s Clara Luz EP came earlier this year and was co-produced by Jon Nuñez of Torche as a follow-up to 2018’s Nontoxic Process EP. Draag has played shows with the likes of Reggie Watts, Part Time, Vinyl Williams, Goon, Young Jesus, Girl Friday.
