Indie rocker and Philadelphia-based Sad13 a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz) announces today that her highly anticipated sophomore record, Haunted Painting, will be released September 25 via Wax Nine.
In 2016, we were graced with Sad13‘s debut record, Slugger, and now four years she’s announced the release of her upcoming follow-up. Sad13‘s sophomore album and the first for Dupuis‘s label, Wax Nine (Melkbelly, Johanna Warren). It marks the return to creating and writing for Dupuis after “reconciling with delayed processing of grief.”
The album, created at a variety of studios across the U.S., including Tiny Telephone in San Francisco, and New Monkey Studio in Van Nuys, California, which had been built by Elliott Smith in the 2000s. Haunted Painting was made exclusively with female engineers. Sad13 “weaves timely societal critiques into rushing hooks and whip-smart wordplay that’s all still a blast, making for one of the most essential releases you’ll hear all year.”
“I worked on Haunted Painting throughout 2019, writing, arranging and recording from home, then finishing the songs in studios around the country in between Speedy‘s fly-in dates,” says Dupuis. “It’s maximalist and more true to me and my tastes than any record I’ve done.”
To celebrate this announcement, she shares her first single, “Ghost (of a Good Time).” Dupuis calls the song her “party song about not going out.” An oddball indie-dance anthem for “the introverts and anti-nostalgists.”
