Iceage
You’re Nothing

Noise, chaos, disjointed thoughts, feelings of aggression and hopelessness. Is “hardcore emo-punk” a genre? Because that is where I would classify this sophomore release from Iceage.
The lads of Iceage have strung together an album so full of societal self-loathing that it plays like the soundtrack for a homicidal maniac. Through the relentless aural onslaught of guitars and drums, we can hear the lyrics in the opening song “Ecstasy”- each day another rock upon my head through a similar onslaught of guitars and drums, “Coalition” complains these days I’m numb and faded, something denies coalition with you.
You won’t be singing along with any of these tunes, but some of the more melodic songs on the album include “In Haze” in which the lyrics quote the Mamas and the Papas- all the leaves are brown and the sky is gray. As well as “Morals” with its military march feel asks where’s your morals, in this cursed realm, where hides Jesus.
This album is meant to be felt, music and lyrics together. Whether you find it profoundly poetic or just a bunch of noise, there is no doubt that this is art. Sort of like that modern art painting you swear an elephant painted; you’re sure it means something, and it might not make sense to you today, but someday it might click and you’ll be glad you gave it the chance.
