Still at Home Here

Grey Gordon has a lot of feelings. Apropos, as the burgeoning singer-songwriter draws heavy inspiration from the 90s emo movement. In his new EP, Still At Home Here, Gordon lets those feelings fly through a undoubtedly pleasant voice, but decidedly unpleasant subject matter. Listening to Still At Home Here is flat out depressing. Again, apropos. But lyrically, Gordon comes off as somewhat immature. “Do you remember how it feels to care? / I doubt it.” And clichés drop like it’s hot, with someone always there to “catch me when I fall” and references to “my dying day.”
I am adamant to distinguish the difference in pointing out the flaws in Still At Home Here and with Grey Gordon. The artist himself is clearly quite competent. His voice is like honey and the guitar work is very good. Sometimes, it’s utterly fantastic. The opening song “Broken Vows” may be rife with womp womp lyrics, but the arrangement is perfection and a strong start. Sadly, the energy there peters out on the rest of the tracks. But there’s no denying the talent and potential here. Grey Gordon is just a good collaboration away from greatness.
