Yesterday, Frances Quinlan of the indie-rock band, Hop Along, released a new song, “Your Reply”, from her upcoming solo album, Likewise, due out January 31st on Saddle Creek.
Likewise has been penned one of the most anticipated albums of 2020 by outlets like Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, Stereogum, and Paste.
On “Your Reply”, the narrator sings about a one-sided relationship by approaching a loved one with tenderness when all you get from the other person is silence. “There can be a one-sidedness to even the most loving and rewarding relationships,” Quinlan said in a press release. “We will always have a part of ourselves we can’t or don’t know how to share. There are so many risks involved. Regardless, I think of this song as celebratory. If anything, the speaker is frustrated at coming so close to understanding another person completely, but perhaps only just missing the mark. But still what a gift that is, to come close.”
Quinlan produced all of the artwork from the album including the cover’s self-portrait. Quinlan will also celebrate the release of her album with two pop-up art galleries in New York City and LA. The free and open-to-the-public event will feature her work from the record, a live Q&A, and live playback. The events will take place in NYC on January 29 at the Selinas Chelsea and in Los Angeles at Junior High on March 13. The week following the album release, the Selinas Chelsea will host a Frances Happy Hour where her work will remain on display in the lobby with the album playing daily at 6:00 p.m. The artwork will also be displayed at Blackwing Pop Up in Rough Trade NYC during February.
