Wiz Khalifa, LP, Afrojack, and Philly’s own OCD Moosh and Twist put on a show at the Piazza at Schmidt’s to kick off Forbes’ Under 30 Summit.
OCD Moosh and Twist started the evening accompanied by a live drummer to give their music that extra umph. The duo was high energy and despite Moosh’s broken hand, he was often seen standing on the humongous speakers in front of the stage to get that much closer to the crowd.
Moosh and Twist would occasionally do a hip-hop medley to hype the crowd up. Introductions between songs gave them some weight and lessened the bite of the crowd not being familiar with their music. Familiar or not, though, the crowd waved their hands from side to side all the same.
LP went on next and her voice was a definite highlight of the evening. She did a cover of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” that was electrifying. Anytime LP belted, it was a magical moment…not to mention a killer whistle that was the hallmark of a few songs. “Into the Wild” was one stand out in particular.
A big part of the event that took place before each performance was the calls to actions by co-organizer and non-profit Global Citizen. Most of the people in attendance were there because they or a friend had earned points contributing to the Global Citizen cause to fight extreme poverty around the world. Contributions were as simple as signing a petition or watching a video. Each artist on the Under 30 summit music festival stage endorsed the cause at some point in their set.
Wiz Khalifa had a rock star energy from the moment he stepped on stage until the end where he gave a speech about spreading good energy and following your dreams. Accompanied by his band Kush and Orange Juice, Wiz Khalifa had the crowd in the palm of his hand from beginning to end. Even if you’re not an avid listener of Wiz Khalifa, you’d be surprised by how many Wiz Khalifa songs you know and how energetic they are live.
It was chilly and late when Afrojack got on stage. There was a little delay due to technical difficulties with the projector and lights. It all got sorted out but the impatience in the crowd was evident. Afrojack’s introduction was the one where the crowd was most unruly…but that could be chalked up to just a long day of drinking. Nevertheless, the crowd went crazy the moment Afrojack started spinning his turntables.
The crowd never felt tighter or filled with more movement than during Afrojack’s performance. When the beat dropped and Afrojack said “jump” the crowd asked how high. The raised level of Afrojack’s DJ booth made it better to be with the masses in the middle of crowd instead of the front near the stage. Still, that didn’t stop the Afrojack diehards from getting as close as possible, leaving those in the back who just wanted to dance the space to do so.
