Rising alt-pop singer, Petra Jarrar, is thrilled to debut her new single and music video for her song, “Past Life.” The track is an ode to all the former musicians from the ’90s and early 2000s electronic pop. Lyrically, the song is centered on “unexpectedly connecting with a former love and the emotions that come with it.”
The track was produced by Alex Arias (Cher, Matchbox 20). Jarrar comes from a Palestinian/Sri-Lankan ethnic background, and says she “never truly saw girls who looked like her in the spotlight.” She continually takes advantage of her platform and voice to pave the way for “womxn of color, advocating for diversity, representation, and inclusion throughout the music industry.”
Jarrar has performed all over the world — from headlining shows in NYC at the Knitting Factory and Webster Hall, in Boston at the Hard Rock Cafe, and in Los Angeles at The Mint. She’s also had stints in Japan and China.
She plans to continue to release music throughout 2020. She’s taking a complete 180 with her sound going from a more acoustic sound to more alt-pop/electronic pop-influenced music.
Here is a quote from Jarrar:
“‘Past Life’ is a departure from what I am used to creating, but in the best way possible. I decided to step out of my comfort zone when writing and producing this single. I began working on this song during the early peak of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Overwhelmed with feeling lost, anxious, and alone, I began listening to all of my pop guilty pleasures, such as Cher, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Rina Sawayama, Charli XCX, CHVRCHES, and countless others to get me out of my funk. I was mentally and physically exhausted with being trapped in quarantine and just wanted to dance, be out with my friends, and see my family. “Past Life” is a song I always wanted to create, and finally had the chance to shed my fears and unveil the inner Pop Diva I hid away for so long.”
