In Dream

As with any other band, you rate the band on how well they return to the spotlight with new music, and Editors has returned remarkably with their latest album, In Dream.
Their first studio album in two years, In Dream is full of indie rock/alternative rock songs covered in synths and an ’80s vibe reminiscent of Depeche Mode. Editors opens In Dream with the haunting, synth-based track, “No Harm”. The song opens with the lyrics: “I boil easier than you / Crush my bones into glue / I’m a go-getter”. You can nearly feel the hurt in lead vocalist Tom Smith’s voice as he sings those lyrics.
The second track, “Ocean of Night”, features a beautiful piano and – gasp! – a female background vocalist. “Ocean of Night” is a much more upbeat track than other Editors songs. As with many of the band’s songs, they have a very haunting, sad, and hurting aspect to them, but with “Ocean of Night”, the track definitely provides a glimpse of what else the band is capable of. The track almost has a Coldplay-esque feel to it with an Editors twist.
On “Salvation”, Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” comes to mind, as it has a very epic, large sound with a sweeping strings section – clearly a track that is set for radio.
One of the standouts, however, is definitely “Our Love” with its disco feel and Smith’s vocals. His vocal range is just incredible and between those two elements of the track it is able pull together a full-sounding disco/’80s vibe.
This record has shown that Editors can really branch out into various genres and sounds while still protecting their unique sound.
