Nothing Ordinary

This EP is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. It’s not often that an album or EP comes along and has me in its thrall on the second track. Being a reviewer, every note is scrutinized, every melody picked apart, but Nothing Ordinary is beyond that. The melodies, harmonies, musicianship is flawless. We’re not talking about Scar Symmetry technicality, but about songs where every element comes together perfectly and creates something special. Vocally there are touches of Jason Mraz, but the heartache and pain in “Farewell” is Kodaline tangible.
“Riptide” is utterly captivating with an air of sadness that’s edged with hope. It’s a track that meanders slowly and carefully forwards making sure that each note counts and each second is breathed in. This is a five track EP and if it’s a precursor to an album then whatever comes next will be breath-taking. If this is all we hear from East Of Eli then we have a body of work, albeit a small one, that has longevity.
