Some albums don’t quite make sense on the first listen. Or the second. This is one of those albums. There are some frantic moments as the musical arrangements lean towards the literal. This can be a distraction. “Westbound Train” sounds like you speeding through the Wild West. But it is quite fitting on “The Circus”. The vocals echo like the melody is trapped in a hall of mirrors. In a moment as lonely as Mazzy Star’s “Fade into you”, an achingly beautiful voice sings “there’s no fire you can tend gonna melt his heart”. That is the moment worth listening for.
