Down to the Wire

Down to the Wire covers more rock genres in six songs than most people do in a lifetime.
Derek Evry’s new EP has straight rock, hard rock, soft rock, surf rock, and pop rock, just to name a few. It starts out with some crescendoed guitar feedback, leading the ear to believe we’re in for some heavy metal action, but not so! “Without You” is a little over a minute and half in length and has solid vocals and a solid melody, and would probably fall into the category of straight up, feel good rock. With this little ditty setting the tone for the album, “So Hard” comes in next as a rock ballad that has anthem potential. Continuing on, “Luck & Desire” starts moving with guest singer Ryan Walker of The Beanstalk Library, showcasing gritty guitar and a driven bass leading the way. The remainder of the songs on the album cover surf rock in “Up To You”, hard rock in “Wake Me Up” and beautiful soft rock in “Everlasting”.
“Wake Me Up” is the most impressive of the tunes, with solid gold vocals, including a very well produced heavy metal scream near the end, and classic instrumental performances from Evry’s “Band of Misanthropes”. Of all the unique and singable songs on the album, you’ll be walking away with “Wake Me Up” in your head for sure.
In short, Down to the Wire rocks. That is all.
