Warm Blanket

Songwriter and multi- instrumentalist Dent May releases his third album, Warm Blanket. Another addition into the world of psychedelic pop/punk rock. Each song has a wonderful mix of instruments, mostly played by May and no song feels like their isn’t enough sound to it. The album’s theme of living in the wrong era is one that many can relate to and isn’t too oppressive in the songs but merely a small reminder- perhaps like a wet blanket that something isn’t quite right. The lyrics and melancholy vocals were quiet and perfect additions to the music, even if at times the vocals sounded strange due to auto-tuning.
While there was a thematic tie there was not a designated sound for the album. Some were extremely strong and polished sounding like “Endlessly” and others sounded tinny and displeasing like “Summer is Over”. Perhaps the weakest element of the 12 track album is the opening track “Turn Up The Speakers.” This track was all together too short and felt more like a sound check than anything that flowed well with the rest of the album. Thankfully it is followed by “Let Them Talk” which features a great sound and a catchy hook that propels your interest in listening to the other tracks.
“Born Too Late” and “I’m Ready To Be Old” are perhaps the albums strongest tracks. Both represent the idea that something isn’t quite right, that May isn’t happy with the way things are. The vocals blend together well in both with the many instrumental sounds and the lyrics themselves are very poignant and stuck with me.
