La Isla Bonita

Deerhoof is interesting. While they’ve always been known to “thrill”, as it’s so often put, their new album, La Isla Bonita, is, dare I say, relaxing, but fun. Sure, their signature shrieks and riffs find their place among the tracks, but this is less “freak-out” music and more “sun-tan” music. Though eccentric, it’s indie-poppy and pleasant, sort of like an exciting but chic summer soundtrack. Tracks are dance-able, but calm, and even a little bit strange. Though the band draws a punk-y influence along with a groovy one, La Isla Bonita seems to be a jumble of the two. It’s pretty strange, and pretty unique. Altogether an enjoyable album.
