The Canadian outfit, Kodiak Arcade, has released their new single, “Something Real,” out now. The song is available across streaming platforms and the accompanying video is available on YouTube.
Kodiak Arcade is a trio led by composer, Graeme Cornies, who makes electronic music paired with abstract imagery in collaboration with AI. Cornies is known for his television work with Voodoo Highway Music and Post.
“Something Real” was the first collaboration with Brian Pickett (Strumbellas, Simon and the Island, Warped 45s) and Joshua Van Tassel (Great Lake Swimmers, Sarah Slean, KIRTY). The trio will be collaborating together on a few upcoming Kodiak Arcade releases. They shared files of their work in individual recording studios to make the song since they live hours apart.
“This song is a reminder to me that the past is gone, that the future is unwritten, and that the only way to make the most of the present is to intentionally be there mentally,” said Cornies. “We might not be living the present we envisioned, but it’s what we actually have, and best of all, it’s something real.”
The video was created using images generated by Cornies using VQGAN+CLIP. It was created with the help of Katherine Crowson, Ryan Murdoch, and OpenAI. The technology used for making the video is still new, but Cornies is hopeful that it will continue to grow and improve.
“I made every frame of the animated video using a revolutionary new process for image-making, involving human and AI collaboration,” He began. “Essentially, I asked a computer to imagine specific things and this is the outcome,” said Cornies. “It’s a unique look into where AI imagery is at right now. Still, I have the feeling that we’re witnessing a beautiful technology in its infancy.”
