True Crime

Once you get past the I-need-an-adult feeling you get after seeing the band’s name, Butter the Children’s new EP, True Crime, does its job to butter you up into wanting to hear much more. Eh? See what I did there? These punk pop princesses are a killer shot of adrenaline, owing a lot to The Donnas, but sporting the catchy exuberance of The Pipettes.
In just these three short tunes, one can tell immediately that Butter the Children would be an awesome live band. Whether they can keep up the oomph for an entire album remains to be seen. The same can be said for whether they can successfully tone it down a bit for a nice head-banging breather. Of the three samey tracks on True Crime, the first “Spit It Out” is at the head of the class. Good enough to keep up with The Ramones even. Its followers are fine, but just enough to make you root for them. Though, I would highly encourage not chanting out their name just yet. At least, not without making sure the room is clear of social service agents.
